The national insurance rule
Article 35(i) of the regulation requires illness insurance arranged with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with benefits similar to the common basic portfolio of Spain's National Health System and valid for the intended duration of the stay. Article 53 sets the requirements for obtaining and maintaining the study authorisation. Public entitlement may provide a different route where the authority accepts it.
Consular and in-Spain applications
A visa application made abroad and an application for long-duration study authorisation made in Spain are not identical procedures. Use the current page for the route being followed. The Los Angeles consulate link below is an example of a consular checklist, not evidence that every consulate asks for the same presentation.
Check dates and payment evidence
The policy must cover the intended stay. Individual checklists may ask for a particular start date, proof of payment or confirmation that the contract remains in force. A quotation does not prove that cover has started.
Existing public or home-country cover
Some students may remain insured through a public system or coordination arrangement. Ask the responsible institution to confirm the period and benefits in writing then check whether the deciding Spanish authority accepts that document. An EHIC or GHIC should not be assumed sufficient for a long course.
Accompanying family members
Family members accompanying a student must meet the healthcare condition applying to their own route. Do not assume that a certificate naming only the student also covers a spouse or child.
Documents to retain
Keep the certificate, full policy, personalised terms and proof of payment where requested. If the policy was medically underwritten, retain the health declaration and final decision as well.
