Who may receive an S1
The form can be relevant to state pensioners, posted workers, cross-border workers, civil servants and some dependants. Eligibility is personal and follows the coordination rules applying to the individual. A US, Canadian or Australian pension does not create S1 entitlement.
Request the form before registration
Ask the health institution responsible for your cover to issue the S1. Check the name, date of birth, address and any included family beneficiaries. If the institution supplies separate forms for family members, keep each one.
Use the recognition document locally
After recognition, contact the health service for the autonomous community where you live. That regional registration is normally the step that connects you with a health centre and provides the local health card. The name of the card and requested documents vary by region.
S1, EHIC and private treatment are different
A registered S1 can establish entitlement to public healthcare in Spain. It does not give access to a private insurer's medical network. An EHIC or GHIC is primarily evidence for qualifying temporary stays, not the registration document used when Spain becomes your country of residence.
If the application is still being decided
Do not assume that possession of an unregistered form completes a visa or residence requirement. Ask the authority deciding the application which evidence it accepts and retain both the S1 and the Spanish recognition document once issued.
