Check before conception where possible

A waiting period can prevent use of childbirth benefits even when ordinary consultations are available. Record the policy start date and the separate maternity timetable.

Hospital and professional network

Confirm the obstetrician, hospital, anaesthetist and neonatal facilities. Their inclusion should not be inferred from one clinic appearing in a directory.

Existing pregnancy

An existing pregnancy may be treated under underwriting or pre-existing-condition rules. Obtain the insurer’s written decision rather than relying on a general maternity description.

The baby’s cover

Ask how and when a newborn must be added, whether congenital conditions are treated separately and what happens if neonatal care begins before formal addition.

If you are comparing cover, read the benefits and exclusions together, then compare the full contract rather than the product name.
