When private cover is commonly required

This commonly includes Non-Lucrative Visa applicants without recognised public entitlement, students whose existing cover is insufficient and teleworkers whose Social Security arrangement does not provide healthcare in Spain.

When public entitlement may already exist

People working in Spain and registered with Social Security, qualifying beneficiaries and some people holding a registered S1 can have public healthcare. Confirm recognition rather than relying on employment, family status or a pension alone.

When private cover is optional

A person with public entitlement may still buy private insurance for a particular hospital network or access to private appointments. That is a purchasing choice, not evidence that immigration rules require the policy.

Before choosing a policy

Identify the official requirement, verify the insurer in the DGSFP register and read the actual contract. These checks answer different questions.

Short visits are different

Travel or reciprocal cover for a visit should not be confused with long-term residence evidence.

What to do next

If you are comparing cover, read the benefits and exclusions together, then compare the full contract rather than the product name.
